1-Introduction

This training equips practitioners to integrate functional adaptation, assistive devices, and environmental modifications using an OT perspective, emphasizing client-centered, participation-focused rehabilitation.

2-Training Objectives

Participants will be able to:

  1. Apply the Person–Environment–Occupation (PEO) model in clinical decision-making
  2. Identify and select appropriate assistive devices for mobility, upper limb function, ADLs, and cognition
  3. Adapt home, school, or work environments to support function
  4. Follow structured referral and interdisciplinary processes
  5. Evaluate device manufacturing, procurement, and maintenance considerations

3-Functional Adaptation Process

  • When it starts: at the first functional limitation, not only after severe disability
  • Assessment: evaluate the person’s abilities, task demands, and environmental factors
  • Goal setting: participation-focused goals, short-term and long-term
  • Adaptation strategies

4-Assistive Devices

Mobility: AFO/KAFO, canes, walkers, wheelchairs
Upper limb: Resting/functional/dynamic splints, mobile arm supports
ADL: Feeding, dressing, hygiene aids, bathroom safety equipment
Positioning: Bed and wheelchair supports, pressure-relief devices
Communication & cognition: AAC systems, memory aids, smart home controls

Key principle: devices are tools within the adaptation process, not isolated solutions

5-Environmental Adaptation

  • Adjust home, school, or workplace layout for safety and accessibility
  • Include ramps, grab bars, lighting, furniture arrangement, and workspace setup
  • Integration of devices with the environment enhances participation and independence

6-Referral and Procurement

  • Interdisciplinary assessment → prescription → orthotist/vendor referral → fitting → training → follow-up

7-Expected Outcomes

  • Improved clinical reasoning for device prescription
  • Better integration of devices and environmental modifications
  • Participation-focused, client-centered rehabilitation
  • Stronger interdisciplinary collaboration and follow-up
