Training Overview:

This training aims to strengthen clinicians’ ability to assess sensory modulation difficulties using both formal assessment tools (SP2) and informal clinical observation. It provides a structured understanding of sensory modulation assessment and emphasizes practical clinical reasoning needed to translate data into meaningful intervention goals while using the formal way to write the results and analysis.

This workshop is a continuation of the previous training “Sensory Modulation: Theory to Practice.” While the first training focused on foundations and intervention principles, this second module focuses on assessment, interpretation, and case synthesis.

Training Objectives

By the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:

  1. Describe the principles of sensory modulation relevant to assessment.
  2. Administer and interpret the Sensory Profile 2 (SP2) to identify sensory thresholds and behavioral patterns.
  3. Conduct structured clinical observations targeting sensory reactivity and regulation.
  4. Integrate SP2 results with real-time observations to build a coherent clinical picture.
  5. Write functional clinical objectives based on assessment findings.
  6. Apply assessment data through a final case-study synthesis exercise.

Training Content & Structure

  1. Theoretical Foundations (45 minutes)
  • Quick review of sensory modulation principles.
  • Understanding sensory thresholds, reactivity, and sensory patterns (based on Winnie Dunn’s model).
  • The role of assessment in identifying functional impacts.
  1. Sensory Profile 2 (SP2): Interpretation & Clinical Use (45 minutes)
  • Choosing the the right SP-2 Version.
  • Overview of SP2 scales and quadrants.
  • Identifying sensory modulation patterns.
  • Mini case example for applied interpretation.
  1. Clinical Observation in Sensory Modulation (30 minutes)
  • What to observe and how to structure sensory observations.
  • How to safely provoke sensory situations.
  • Using observation to confirm or contrast SP2 results “ by presenting the Sensory checklist worked on in OT department”
  1. Integrating Findings (15 minutes)
  • How to merge formal and informal data.
  • Identifying primary sensory challenges.
  • Translating findings into intervention priorities.
  1. Final Case Synthesis Exercise (45 minutes)
  • Group work based on:
    • SP2 sample
    • Clinical observation notes
    • Case scenario
  • Participants analyze data and produce:
    • A sensory modulation profile
    • Key challenges
    • Intervention objectives
  • Group presentations and feedback.

Expected Outcomes

Participants will leave with improved ability to:

  • Conduct comprehensive sensory modulation assessments
  • Make accurate results and interpretations of SP2
  • Observe sensory responses clinically and systematically
  • Build stronger intervention plans based on combined assessment data
